SURAH 49 : Al-Hujurât |
1. O Jamaat-ul-Momineen! (The foremost and fundamental conditions for the universal revolution for which you have risen as harbingers, is to maintain complete discipline in your ranks and personal life. For this keep in mind that) Unless you receive a directive from the centre of the Divine Order, do not take any steps on your own. Always wait to receive its directive. Guard the Divine Laws under all circumstances. Remember Allah is All-hearing, All-knowing. (Hence any decision taken according to His Laws, will certainly be the best.)
2. And keep your views subservient to the central authority. Do not let your voice rise above that of the Nabi; and during the course of consultations, do not create a noisy atmosphere in order to make your suggestion prevail, like you do when talking to each other. In so doing your deeds will go to waste, without you ever being aware of it. (This will be the inadvertent consequence of your attitude.)
3. Verily Allah cleanses and purifies the hearts of those who keep their views subservient to the Centre. (They wholeheartedly obey the laws.) He keeps them safe from destruction and bestows great rewards upon them.
4. And when some uncultured people come to see you they start shouting for you from outside your house. (They ignore the demands of collective discipline and even normal social etiquette.)
5. They should wait for you to come out of the house (then they can say whatever they want to, with dignity and respect). This attitude would be much better for them. Nevertheless (since these people unknowingly do such things out of ignorance, not meaning any disrespect) Allah Almighty forgives this attitude and makes provisions to not only protect them, but to also provide for their development.
6. O Rasool! Tell your companions, “If any deviant person comes to you with a (slanderous) tale, do not immediately accept it. First ascertain it, lest you unwittingly take a step which brings harm to someone; and then regret what you have done.
7. (Remember, you are no longer living a life of indiscipline and disorder. Now you are under collective discipline and order and have a system with its own central authority and) Allah’s Rasool is living amongst you. All issues must be referred to him and you should act according to whatever decision he gives. Do not expect that he will accept or comply with whatever you say. If he starts doing so it will surely create disorder and cause you trouble. Allah Almighty wants that you stay firm in your faith and embellish your hearts with it. (This can be done practically by willingly obeying Divine Laws and keeping your own ideas subservient to them.) Allah does not want you to deny His Laws or select some other course and rebel against His Order. Remember! Those who adopt a righteous way of life with firm faith shall stay away from disbelief and rebellion. These are the people who are on the rightly guided path.
8. As a result they will receive all kinds of comforts, bounties and pleasures of life. Remember that whatever Allah commands is based on His absolute knowledge and wisdom.
9. Whenever (unfortunately) two groups of Momineen fight one another, immediately make peace between them. If one of the two groups again commits aggression against the other, you should (not be indifferent but) fight the transgressors until they return to the decision made earlier according to the Divine Law. Thereafter if they do return, make just and fair peace between them. Always be just as according to Divine Laws this attribute is highly commendable.
10. (While dealing with such matters remember that) All Momineen are brethren and as such when making peace between them, consider both as your brothers. Your decision should be just and fair, according to the Divine Laws. In this way your Jamaat will continue receiving Allah’s Rahmat.
11. (Sometimes due to mutual differences you are overpowered with feelings of dislike and hatred. In such situations do not indulge in detestable actions. For instance) One faction starts ridiculing the other and tries belittling them. It is quite possible that those being ridiculed might be better than the members of your own party. Neither your men nor women should show such behaviour; nor should you scandalize one another; nor be sarcastic and call offensive names. After professing Eiman you are expected to exhibit exemplary behaviour. You should not address one another illmanneredly. This is very offensive. If someone has acted like that he should immediately regret it and stop this attitude. If he does not do so, according to the Divine Law he would be considered guilty.
12. (When mutual differences arise, mischievous people take advantage and tell tales to both parties. In this regard you should be very careful. Have positive feelings and) Avoid ill feelings against others. Furthermore some ill feelings slacken or dull goodwill. And do not eavesdrop or backbite against one another. Would any one of you like to eat the flesh of a dead brother? You would abhor it! (Backbiting is that detestable.)
In short, always remain conscious of the Divine Laws. If you have committed a mistake somewhere, then correct yourself by being ashamed of it. In this way the Divine Law will forgive your slips and ensure that the development of your self does not suffer.
13. (The above social evils have been mentioned because some people consider themselves superior and try to belittle others. This attitude is also prevalent in other walks of life. For instance, men think that they are superior to women; or that certain families are more respectable than others. Both these concepts are wrong.) We have created humans in a manner that all of them are formed from a male and female (meaning that in every child, whether male or female, there is a portion of a man and a woman. It is therefore incorrect to presume that men are superior to women; or that women as human beings are different from men). As regards various families or tribes, the objective (of different distinctions) is that you should be able to recognize each other. No tribe or family is superior to the other. According to the Divine Law the criteria to determine status or superiority is how closely and consciously one follows and guards the Divine Laws? And Who obeys Him more? The one whose whole life is in conformity with this criteria is most worthy of respect. The person may either be man or woman, or from any family or tribe. The criteria for superiority is not race or status, but personal character and behaviour. This is being told by the Almighty, Who knows well what superiority means and how it is earned.
14. (Even the factor determining the status of those entering the Islamic Order will be based on this very criteria. For instance) The Bedouins say, “We profess Eiman. Consider us among the Momineen.” Tell them, “You have not yet attained the status of a Momin. You have only surrendered (outwardly) to the authority of the Islamic State, but Eiman has not entered deep into your hearts. However if you continue obeying the Divine System which has been established by the Rasool, you will receive full reward of your deeds. Not even the smallest of your deeds will go waste; and like every one else you will continue receiving means of nourishment and protection from this system.”
15. The Momineen are those who profess Eiman in Allah and His Rasool (after pondering over it) in a way that there remains no doubt in their minds whatsoever; and they make continuous efforts and strive hard to establish and strengthen this Order. They spend their wealth and if the occasion demands give their lives for this purpose. These people are true to their commitment.
16. (The touchstone of the truthfulness of Eiman is the human deed. Tell them (the people who only talk and do not work accordingly), “Do you want to convince Allah just by talking that you are extremely obedient and firm in faith? Remember, Allah knows everything that exists in the heavens and on earth. He is well aware of everything.”
17. (O Rasool!) Then these people talk as if they have done you a favour by accepting Islam. Tell them, “Do not claim any favour on me. In fact this is Allah’s beneficence upon you that He has guided you to to Eiman. Thus, if you are really serious and true in your claim, it is demanded that you express open gratitude to Allah, rather than claim any favour on me.”
18. Tell them that your saying so or reminders do not make any difference, for Allah knows the hidden realities and secrets of the entire universe. How can your deeds remain hidden from him? He sees all what you do. The result of every action is compiled according to His Law of Mukafat.
Surah 49. AL-HUJURAT– the administrative structures and procedures
In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
[1] O you who claim to be committed to working for peace, proceed not
without following the constitution of Allah along with His messenger that is
how you should be consistent with the rule of Allah for the well being of each
other. Surely Allah observes and makes obvious results of your actions in due
course.
[2] O you who claim to be committed to working for peace! In assembly during consultation session with each other do not talk over the heads of each other against the advice of the messenger and never treat his this advice for your mutual consultation as of no consequence as you used to do with opinions
and decisions of each other because if you did that then all your hard work for the community could come to nothing without you even realizing it.
[3] Those who keep their discussions and decisions according to the given framework of messenger of Allah such are the ones whose minds Allah has opened due to revelation for working hard for the well being of each other, they will surely end up secure and dignified due to that and that is indeed a
great reward in itself.
[4] As to those who carry on working outside the systems, structures, procedures and practices you the messenger set up, most of them have little understanding of these things.
[5] If only they had worked hard consistently till you had reached them, that would have been of benefit for them because Allah secures people by educating them through His mercy/revelation.
[6] O you who claim to be committed to working for peace, if at any time any person lacking ability to judge things properly comes to you with some piece of information regarding a people or state then pass it on to your people of relevant department for investigation so that you as a state do not act on this
information before its verification in case you harm some other people unwittingly and then regret what you have done.
[7] So be aware of the fact that the messenger of Allah is sent among you to guide you by guidance of Allah but instead if he were to follow you rather than leading you then in most affairs you all would be in trouble because you lack knowledge about matters that need your decisions. That is how Allah endeared you and beautified it in your minds working for peace as opposed to living by any other way of life that leads to divisions and animosities through suspicions due to misinformation and disinformation, mistrust and distrust leading to infliction of harm and destruction upon each other and that is how disloyalty to each other and messenger of Allah as well as rule of Allah has become abhorrent to you. All because such are the people who are rightly guided
[8] for knowledge from Allah leads to prosperity or freedom from all kinds of poverty and ills in human society. That is how Allah makes obvious His wisdom for humanity to see.
[9] So if any two parties from among those who claim to be working for peace fall into dispute and end up in fighting, restore peace between them on grounds of fairness, brotherhood and compassion. However if any of them fails to agree on good terms and decides to continue the fight against the
other then fight all of you together the one who has transgressed against constitution of Allah until it accepts rule of Allah and if it does turn to constitution of Allah then make peace between them with justice and be fair and compassionate, for Allah loves those who are fair and just with
kindness.
[10] Surely those who claim to be committed to working for peace are brothers to one another therefore make reconciliation between your brothers thus be consistent with constitution of Allah, so that Allah makes evident for all to see His grace for you in form of your progress and prosperity.
[11] O you who claim to be committed to working for peace! Let no nation conquer another nation to make it slave just because they are able to do that and let no community/party among you overpower another party/community to enslave it just because they are able to do that, nor label one another by
offensive names. It is very harmful and destructive thing to do to your brotherhood and for the victim of such abuse to be called by a bad name after one has chosen to commit to work for peace, so those who do not hold themselves back from such a practice are the ones who do things to harm and destroy others and that is how they act against the interest of wider brotherhood.
[12] O you who claim to be committed to working for peace! Mostly avoid acting against each other merely on the basis of baseless assumptions because acting upon some of the baseless assumptions could lead to harm and destruction and for the same reason do not conspire against each other
to inflict damage and destruction on each other. Would any of you be happy in harming and destroying your brother by taking away what he has? Surely you would abhor it if you really love and care about your brother, your family, your tribe, your fellow workers for peace and larger human community because
that is where all goodness you have came from for you. So be consistent with constitution of Allah in whose name you decide rights and responsibilities for each other and that is how Allah shows He is indeed graceful and merciful for mankind.
[13] O mankind! We have evolved you from a male and a female and organized you into nations and tribes so that you become aware of each other’s rights and responsibilities and fulfil your constitutional obligations towards each other. Surely the most dignified person of you is he who is most consistent with constitution of Allah for the good of mankind. Surely Allah makes all this evident in due course through results of your own actions showing clearly he is aware of all that you do.
[14] The people who do not yet know the divine constitution say, we are committed to working for peace. Say, you have not yet committed to working for peace because you do not yet know the set divine purpose and its constitution that sets out terms and conditions for commitment to working for
peace but you can declare your commitment that you have committed yourselves to learning about Islam because the proper concept of peace has not yet entered your minds. Meanwhile if you prove to be consistent with constitution of Allah as you become more and more aware of it along with His
messenger then He will not deny you the fruits of your course of actions because Allah gives protection to mankind through His blissful constitution.
[15] The truly committed to working for peace are only those who claim to be committed to working for peace according to the constitution of Allah along His messenger then never doubt the cause and strive hard for its success with all they have putting even themselves on the line in order to establish the
set goal of Allah for the benefit of mankind. Such are the ones who are really true to their claim of commitment to peace.
[16] Say, think about which is really sensible thing to do, you people learning and following the way of Allah or you telling Allah to accept you ways of life and approve them whereas Allah makes evident for you in due course all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth because He has the knowledge of
everything and you do not?
[17] They think they have conferred upon you a great favor by committing to learning Islam. Tell them, you have conferred upon me no big favor by committing to learning Islam rather it was Allah Who has conferred a huge favor upon you in guiding you towards commitment to peace if you are a
people who have truly committed to working for peace.
[18] Surely Allah makes evident in due course the secrets of the heavens and the earth and so would He make evident through your actions your commitment to working for peace because Allah is watching all that you do.
